I have the Canon S2 IS, which is an older version of the S5 and has the same lens. I love this camera! It allowed me to experiment with aperture priority, shutter priority, and manual mode. I found the macro mode to be very handy also. This camera is extremely versatile and is great for learning about photography without investing in a DSLR. The flip-out LCD is very handy for shooting at angles above your head or very low to the ground.
The main drawback is the small, noisy sensor. This camera is terrific for most anything outdoors.
